Decorating Home… It’s What’s Inside That Matters

“DECORATING is not about making stage sets, it’s not about making pretty pictures for the magazines; it’s really about creating a quality of life, a beauty that nourishes the soul.”

The definition of decorating is the process or art of adorning something. To adorn is to enhance the appearance of, especially with beautiful objects.

Decorating your home is a process all it’s own and is somewhat of a personal matter. Don’t get me wrong here, it’s nothing serious, but it is personal.

I felt compelled to start writing whatever came to mind in reference to a quote by iconic interior designer Albert Hadley… So let’s dive in!

When we think about decorating or adorning our home, we are inclined to start contemplating who we are and perhaps what our personal story is. Just as important, we think about how we’re using our space to accommodate our lifestyle.

As Albert Hadley said, it’s about creating a quality of life. Your home should mean something to you, not be a carbon copy out of a store or a magazine just because it’s what’s “on trend” at the moment.

Naturally, all of this contemplating will cause us to go within… where it really matters. Our “inner” architecture then becomes an outward form of expression, as if to create a visual story about ourselves and our lives.

Indeed, it does take some researching, time, and patience to create what inspires us; but that’s how we stay authentic to our interior surroundings. Let’s face it, a lot of us are not in a position to renovate our lovely home into the dream home we would like it to be. Or if you’re like me, you have a rental and cannot renovate because you don’t own it.  This is when decorating can become a bit of a challenge yet a fun and exciting endeavor!

Yes, I hear you… easier said than done. Soooo… that’s what I’m here for! This is what it’s all about. To help inspire YOU in any way I can to create the space you desire.

Creating a vision board (more on that in another post) is a great tool for decorating. How we visualize and manifest what we desire our home to be through pulling pictures from online and do I dare say… print magazines. We’ve become so accustomed to this online world that we forget about taking inspiration from the beauty of a good old fashioned paper magazine. It’s tangible.

There’s something to be said for turning pages with your fingertips, carefully ripping them out with your hand or using scissors to cut out the pages so you can pull a visual idea together on a board. It’s simple, fun and effective.

Visual creativity ignites inspiration and awakens your soul. Hence why a vision board is a great place to start if you’re feeling uninspired or well… stuck and want your decorating ideas to come alive.

The Imperfect Balance Of Perfection

Have you ever seen something so imperfect that it was just perfect? It was a perfect balance of wrong gone right or right gone wrong and then right again. LOL (ok agreed, that was a bit redundant.) But you get the point.

That imperfect perfect balance of elements throughout your home is what creates a beautiful home. Quick visual: A total country farmhouse table and bench with elegant linen or velvet tufted chairs around it and a chandelier hanging above. Say it with me… STUNNING!

When we think “Farmhouse” style, elegant is not exactly the first word that comes to mind. But throw some elegant chairs into the farmhouse mix and you’ve got yourself a “farmhouse glam” look. Girlfriend, I just snapped my fingers lol. I don’t care what the latest trends are, beauty is beauty no matter what era you are in. It’s all about creating the right balance that compliments who you are and what you want your story to be.

That is the beauty of imperfection. Because of the personal, visual thought process and effort that goes into pulling off that imperfect perfect balance, a house or apartment becomes a home no matter what you have to work with.

This is your chance to get those creative juices flowing to produce the magic that it is! It makes for really good stories to tell when it’s all said and done and you have your friends and family over. Kind of like a fabulous coffee table book and how it makes for a great conversation piece. Your home through decorating should make for great conversation too.

“Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.”

There’s nothing more freeing than being able to express your true self through decorating. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so why not your sanctuary be the beauty of your “interior.”

The decor that ends up throughout our home should nourish our soul. There are endless possibilities when it comes to decorating so just be mindful and have fun with it!

There’s something to be said for someone that can take a space that needs a little TLC and transforms it into something creatively magnificent through the art of decorating. Your home is like a blank canvas waiting to become a piece of art. It becomes a story that you’re telling everyone including yourself and becomes a quality of life. In turn, it’s a beauty that nourishes your soul.

Go ahead, breathe beauty into every corner of your home… Just be yourself, get inspired and make it your own. Because at the end of the day it’s what’s inside that really matters.

I would love to hear what you’ve created in your home. What inspires you and nourishes your soul?

I’m inspired by you, my reader. Please feel free to leave a comment below… Remember, your comments will help inspire others as well. xo
